Tehama Residence

Located in the exclusive development of Tehama in the Monterey Hills above Carmel, California, construction began on this new custom home in Fall 2015.

The guiding principle throughout the design was to respond to and respect the site. The house is sited in a natural clearing within the seven acre wooded site and is orientated on the North/South Axis to maximize solar orientation throughout the year while buffering against the prevailing winds from the west. The home is broken into three buildings to minimize the scale and to create rich outdoor areas in between, allowing a sequence of spaces while continuously opening views through the Oak trees towards the valley below. These buildings follow the contours of the site, transitioning seamlessly from outdoors to indoors and building to building.

A close collaboration was formed early in the design process between our office and internationally renowned Landscape Architect Bernard Trainor which allowed for a cohesive design idea, blurring the line between architecture and landscape. After construction began, this collaboration has continued with the builder Stocker & Allaire. Expected completion 2017.
